Last Night The Planning Commission Said No To NGIC Developer

Last night the Albemarle Planning Commission unanimously decided that a developer who owns property near the National Ground Intelligence Center in Albemarle should not be allowed to add land into the county’s designated growth area.

This could jeopardize the expansion of NGIC. Army officials had planned to bring 820 new jobs to our area by 2011, with the addition of a $60 million facility.

It is now up to the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors to make the final decision. They will take up this issue, and work on the Places29 plan.

The Albemarle County Planning Commission is holding a public hearing and work session related to the Places 29 Master Plan tonight, Tuesday, October 23, 2007, at 6:00pm in Lane Auditorium at the Albemarle County Office Building on McIntire Road. This worksession is an opportunity for the community to present comments to the Albemarle Planning Commission about draft Chapters 1-6 of the Places29 Master Plan.

Places29 is the twenty-year plan for the future of the 29 North corridor.

Fluvanna Board of Supervisors Hearing Ended In Chaos

An emotional public hearing ended in chaos late Wednesday night, 10/17/07, after 11:00pm, without a vote by the Fluvanna County Board of Supervisors. Approval for a new Fluvanna County high school was put off for at least a week. They need $75 million for a high school and auxiliary gym which would be built in three years.

Lake Monticello now has almost 4,000 homes and many residents have school-age children.

Taxes are far less in Fluvanna County than in other areas nearby, so there is room to raise taxes, and all can benefit.

Education is important. Fluvanna is growing and needs more schools.

MRSA Super Bug Health Alert Issued Yesterday

In Virginia earlier this week a super bug death (from the Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) staph infection that is resistant to some antibiotics) closed all Bedford County schools. Also several students in a Chesterfield County high school came down with the MRSA skin infection. United States researchers are reporting a sharp jump in deaths from MRSA. Warning letters were sent home to parents in Weston, Conneticuit and Rome, New York as well.

Usually most people come down with MRSA in hospitals and healthcare facilities, but it is now making its way into the schools as well as other public places.

MRSA is usually contracted as a skin infection, looking like pimples and/or boils.

To prevent catching it:

- Wash your hands thoroughly and often with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Keep wounds, cuts and scrapes clean and covered with a bandage until completely healed.
- Avoid contact with other people's wounds or bandages.
- Avoid sharing personal items such as towels or razors.

Approval To Build New Water Source

We now have approval from the federal government to build a new water source. Thanks to hard workers in our local government including Mike Gaffney and Tom Frederick. Also thanks to Ken Boyd, Chairman of the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors who is currently seeking reelection as the Supervisor for the Rivanna District.
